The 2019 Matetic EQ Coastal Sauvignon Blanc is a pale yellow color with delicate green hues. The complex nose is dominated by citrus and tropical aromas like mango, papaya and grapefruit peel, with nuances of light herbal notes and the typical crispness that this variety shows in coastal cool climates. The palate is fresh and vivid, crisp and concentrated. Very fruity, with a salty mineral dimension leading to a lingering finish.
This Sauvignon Blanc is ideally served with fish, especially raw fish dishes like ceviche, tuna carpaccio, sushi, oysters, scallops, salads, and goat or blue cheeses.
Matetic's Sauvignon Blanc has a great quality/price ratio, and even the top-of-the-range 2019 EQ Coastal Sauvignon Blanc sells for under $20. They want a Sauvignon for the table, one that combines freshness and volume. They fermented part of it in used barrels and concrete, and it matured with the lees for four months in barrique and concrete eggs. This is more restrained—not as aromatic, less herbal—but the palate is terribly juicy and mineral, focused and makes you salivate. It should work wonders with modern Peruvian gastronomy.
Subtle, minerally nose. Some chili pepper and wet stones. Very tensile, taut palate with a lithe, transparent texture. Peaches on the palate with a chalky accent. Very clean and long. A serious sauvignon blanc. Around 1/3 fermented in old barrels, 1/3 in 700L concrete eggs and 1/3 in stainless steel tanks. Drink now.
Julio Bastías uses grapes from Matetic's Valle Hermoso plantings, located eight kilo meter from the Pacific, to make this barrel and amphora-aged Sauvignon Blanc. Gooseberry and passion fruit flavors are supported by racy, saline acidity. 2020-22
